| In it for themselves |

I had someone ask me a question recently. They said that people on social networking sites are only on the sites for their own benefit and just to sell you their program while no one wants to look at yours.
First I have to say that everything we do in life is for ourselves. While many individuals may have very altruistic thoughts and activities, they still do it for themselves because it is what makes them feel good.
Are people only on these sites to promote their businesses and no one is here to look at anything else? That probably has a great deal of truth to it. But doesn't that give you a great opportunity to be the diamond in a pile of coal?
Just think, if you actually talk to people about THEIR interests (not necessarily their business, but what kinds of things they like) and offer to provide them with help in some way (maybe a referral to someone you know or free advice on how to navigate the site or anything you feel competent to help them with) then you gain ground over all of those individuals that simply log in to spam the other members.
And just think, if you are that diamond and make an effort to build a true solid friendship, who are those new friends going to turn to if they need your product, the one spamming them or the one that has helped and been a real friend? And what if they know someone who needs your product? Will they think of you or the one who sent them all those messages without even knowing their first name (which is clearly posted on their profile)?
So go be the diamond and the least you will gain is a good friend. |
